INSPIRATION:
This piece was created during the lockdowns in March of 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic. I’m sure I’m not the only one who felt that life was on hold, at the mercy of nature. Uncertainty, the fear of death, and actual death of loved ones are just some of the scariest parts of this pandemic.
I have a fascination with spiders, what they represent, and our fears surrounding them. The more I appreciate their symbolism and their actual benefits to the ecosystem, the more I appreciate them. But I still struggle to live with them. The porch of my new house is home to many large spiders and their webs. I don’t know whether to learn to live with them or to attempt to eradicate them.
Fear is a part of life that we must live with. A healthy amount of fear can keep us safe. Irrational or overwhelming fears can make us sick. Death is inevitable and a healthy balance must be struck between accepting that fact, and having a healthy amount of fear to keep us safe. The most important thing we can do in any situation is to educate ourselves and arm ourselves with facts so we can weigh risks.
